History of the Unit of Cooperation and International Affairs

The Unit of Cooperation and International Affairs (UCIA), Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (UNIMUS) has continuously evolved in response to the University’s growing commitment to institutional collaboration and internationalization.

The journey began in 2014 with the establishment of the International Affairs Office (Kantor Urusan Internasional), which focused primarily on developing UNIMUS’ international engagement and supporting international academic activities.

As the scope of cooperation expanded, the office underwent several institutional transformations:

  • 2014–2017: International Affairs Office (Kantor Urusan Internasional)
  • 2018–2021: Unit of Cooperation and International Affairs (UPT Kerjasama dan Urusan Internasional)
  • 2022–2024: Institute of Cooperation, Public Relations, and International Affairs (Lembaga Kerjasama, Kehumasan dan Urusan Internasional)
  • 2024–2025: Institute of Cooperation, Public Relations, Protocol, and International Affairs (Lembaga Kerjasama, Kehumasan, Keprotokoleran dan Urusan Internasional)
  • 2026–Present: Unit of Cooperation and International Affairs

The latest transformation in 2026 marks a renewed strategic direction for the unit, with a stronger focus on its core functions, measurable work programs, and impactful partnerships. The Unit is committed not only to expanding UNIMUS’ network of partners but also to ensuring that partnerships lead to meaningful implementation, sustainable programs, and tangible outcomes for the University and its partners.

Today, UNIMUS has established 273 national and international partnerships, reflecting the University’s expanding collaborative network. Its international presence is also strengthened by a growing international student community, which has reached 78 international students, with the number continuing to increase each year.

Moving forward, the Unit of Cooperation and International Affairs will continue to serve as a strategic bridge connecting UNIMUS with national and global partners, transforming institutional agreements into active collaboration and creating greater opportunities for education, research, mobility, innovation, and international engagement.

Our Mission

Establish and strengthen partnerships with national and international institutions to enhance UNIMUS’ global competitiveness.

Enhance internationalization programs across the University, including International Community Service, Joint International Seminars, International Student Competitions, International Student Mobility, International Joint Classes, Research Collaboration, and International Conferences.

Enhance the competitiveness and competencies of human resources and strengthen UNIMUS’ reputation on the international stage.


Objectives

IRO strives to achieve the following institutional objectives :
  1. Enhance the quality of UNIMUS graduates in contributing to a knowledge-based society and preparing them to enter the international job market by developing multilingual skills, communication and negotiation abilities, as well as an understanding of diverse cultures and international regulations.
  2. Contribute to strengthening Indonesia’s capacity to address human development challenges and support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  3. Develop international cooperation through faculty and student exchanges, research collaboration, scientific publications, and the exchange of academic and scientific information between UNIMUS and higher education institutions around the world.
  4. Develop cooperation with foreign governments to support the advancement of UNIMUS as a leading higher education institution.
  5. Develop cooperation with international non-governmental organizations in the areas of academic development, research, and community service.
